Subsession 4 & 8
Educational role of teachers and educators
The changes taking place in society and in education place increasingly high demands on teachers.
'Teachers are asked to be facilitators and classroom managers rather than ex cathedra trainers’, according to the European Commission in the 'Education & Training 2010 work programme' (2007).
Teachers need to be trained in:
different teaching approaches and styles,
using new technologies,
the ability to respond to individualised learning needs,
dealing with cultural diversity.
The Council of Europe also emphasises the social importance of education and the educational role of teachers and educators.
Teachers will need to promote more autonomy among students than ever before. This also means that students will have to learn to be responsible for their own results and for their own planning, as well as being responsible for other students and for their entourage both inside and outside school. In terms of the social role of the school, this could also include issues such as taking responsibility for healthy behaviour, the environment and participating in culture.
Teachers and educators need to have knowledge, learning, insights and attitudes in order to ensure active and reflective art and cultural education in sound educational programmes. The education curriculum and educational training in teacher training institutes need to guarantee this.
In the sub-sessions on the Education role of teachers and educators we will be talking about the quality of cultural education in teacher training courses for basic and further education.
The following questions will be discussed:
How do developments in art and culture affect the curriculum of teacher training courses?
What impact do art and culture have on the skills that educators strive for?
Which way is education evolving?
